Brake fluid begins to age and breakdown within a year. Moisture creeps into the system anytime you open the cylinder reservoir or open a brake line; most have lids vented to the open atmosphere. Glycol-based DOT 3 and DOT 4 brake fluids are "hygroscopic,"-- they attract water like a sponge -- water that rust lines and components from the inside out! DOT 5 Fluid prevents that problem -- it will not absorb moisture.
